I Do NOT Understand European Pop

This past Saturday night was the final qualifying round for each country to pick their entry into the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest.

Watching the UK entries, I was a bit flabbergasted at how schlocky most of the tunes were. And then I found the contest's website and started looking at all the other entries.

Yikes!

Now granted, a few of the entries are quite good and have their own individual sound. But the overall majority is just plain old cheesy pop.

Still, if you're looking for a way to kill some time, here's the website and you can view the videos or just listen to the audio. Think of it as a cultural exchange if you will.

My money is on Turkey to win, but I also liked the Georgia and Germany entries as well. And the UK entry? Some group called Scooch.

I just don't get it.

I need to listen to some Neil Young or Bob Dylan to cleanse my pallet.

wow...who would have thought that there were so many countries in europe! :-)

...and so much bad music to enjoy. Thanks for the link--i'll probably waste a few hours there. I'm curious how the "elections" for the representative tunes were conducted. And does the winning song go on to attempt to conquer the rest of the world?

I'm flabbergasted at how schlocky most North American pop music is. Seeing as the Euros learned it from us in the first place, maybe they're just a few decades behind in the evolution of schlock?

Eurovision is not about MUSIC!! Its about kitch kitch kitch baby!!!

I hope you get to go to a Eurovision party where everyone laughs at the acts and bets on which country will give what vote. The votes are hysterical - they are all political not musical at all. I always find it funny when they try to make eurovision "great" - its just a silly europe-wide gameshow really!!

Enjoy!
Best Wishes

I agree with Kirsty. The best thing about the whole event is good old Terry Wogan's damningly sarcastic running commentary. I watch the contest for that alone.

Open a bottle of wine and put your tongue firmly in your cheek and enjoy!

I agree - Terry Wogan is hysterical. The UK entry is really bad this year, though. And I mean REALLY bad. As my co-worker Paul said, "Never trust the British public to choose anything."
